For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park: We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails—but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? Why do they play tug-of-war with one dog, while showing their bellies to another? Why are some dogs shy, while others are bold? What goes on in dogs’ heads and hearts—and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by award-winning scientist—and lifelong dog lover—Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs’ lives the best they can possibly be. Rooted in the most up-to-date science on cognition and emotion—fields that have exploded in recent years—Canine Confidential is a wonderfully accessible treasure trove of new information and myth-busting. Peeing, we learn, isn’t always marking; grass-eating isn’t always an attempt to trigger vomiting; it’s okay to hug a dog—on their terms; and so much more. There’s still much we don’t know, but at the core of the book is the certainty that dogs do have deep emotional lives, and that as their companions we must try to make those lives as rich and fulfilling as possible. It’s also clear that we must look at dogs as unique individuals and refrain from talking about “the dog.” Bekoff also considers the practical importance of knowing details about dog behavior. He advocates strongly for positive training—there’s no need to dominate or shame dogs or to make them live in fear—and the detailed information contained in Canine Confidential has a good deal of significance for dog trainers and teachers. He also suggests that trainers should watch and study dogs in various contexts outside of those in which they are dealing with clients, canine and human, with specific needs. There’s nothing in the world as heartwarming as being greeted by your dog at the end of the workday. Read Canine Confidential, and you’ll be on the road to making your shared lives as happy, healthy, and rewarding as they can possibly be.

This book is written for the leader or management team of any complex organization attempting to lead an organization-wide change. Successfully leading change has never been easy. Many realities of life in the 21st century have combined to intensify the challenge. This book captures the lessons learned during more than 43 years of experience working in complex, large-scale organizations, 14 years between West Point and the United States Army and more than 29 years in two large, very different American companies. These lessons learned are shared in the hope that it will help others lead change successfully and avoid at least some of the pitfalls that come with it. The principles and questions in this book also benefit leaders making changes in the small organization or those who desire to transform their small organization into a large one. This book is intended to serve as a leaders’ guide of things to think about and how to plan for successful change. Many books have been written about management and leadership, as well as the dos and must-dos of leading an organization. But few books discuss what it takes to make changes in today’s complex organizations, and those that do are often written by consultants who have not practiced what they propose over any significant period of time. This book, by contrast, draws lessons from a successful long-term change made by leaders who had a personal and financial stake in the organization’s success and saw the change all the way through. "In my 40 years at Cummins one of the most successful changes made was our adoption of Six Sigma. When I became CEO it was clear that we needed to improve our product and overall business performance. We chose Six Sigma to help us do that. George's book concisely captures many of the things we had to think about when implementing Six Sigma throughout the company. I believe this is a good guide for any leader contemplating making an organization-wide change." Tim Solso, former CEO, Cummins, Inc. "As CEO I have discovered that just saying I want something done doesn’t make it happen. Change done well is hard work. George’s book is a practical go-to guide for driving lasting change." Tom Linebarger, CEO, Cummins, Inc. "In medicine today ever-higher quality has become an expectation. This expectation is causing us increasingly to transition from volume-based to value-based medicine. As an industry we are quickly adapting to this new value-based world. However, organizations don’t transform easily. It requires dedicated and engaged teams to be leaders of change in their industry. I have been waiting for a book like this for years…whether you are a medical student or a senior attending physician…George Strodtbeck’s book on Making Change is a must read!!!" James Grant, M.D., Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Beaumont Health System, Royal Oak, MI "George Strodtbeck draws on more than three decades of personal experience in planning and executing change in complex organizations. His incisive, fast-paced writing explains, engages and motivates. His guidance is candid about challenges faced but simultaneously practical and actionable in today’s organizations. This book is for any leader seeking to accelerate the pace of change, improvement and innovation in their organizations." Mohan V. Setting up on a sunny day at the beach or snapping a passport photo, the studio photographer measures out his working day in repeated frames, fixing the ordinary customer on film. Addressing the enduring value of these portraits and the viewer's common humanity with the subjects is the aim of "Mapping Sitting," a collection of studio photographs, primarily from the 1950s and 1960s, that shows an Arab world that defies stereotypes. Drawn from the archives of the Arab Image Foundation, whose mission is to rescue and preserve indigenous Arab photography, and curated by two Lebanese-born artists, Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari, these photographs provide a moving mosaic of Middle Eastern men and women posing in the studio, lounging on the sand, or goofing around on bikes. There are also pages of carefully indexed passport photos, which become charged with meaning in a post-9/11 world. The exhibition from which "Mapping Sitting" was drawn, mounted at the Grey Art Gallery in New York, was widely reviewed in publications such as "The New York Times" and "New York" Magazine.

"Henceforth I will serve Evil. I'll become a most depraved character. I'll turn really wicked." - Fursey Having escaped being burnt at the stake, the reluctant sorcerer Fursey is back in this sequel, trying to make a quiet life for himself as a grocer in the realm of King Ethelwulf. But when his old enemies seize his wife, Fursey resolves to embrace evil and return to Ireland to reclaim her. Along the way, he'll have to contend with bloodthirsty Vikings, a melancholy vampire, an alcoholic wizard, a lovesick cow, and Satan himself, who is more determined than ever to get his hands on Fursey's soul. "The Return of Fursey shows no lessening at all in Wall's quality of imagination ... as with the best of Charlie Chaplin, or of Anton Chekhov or O'Casey, the laughter is very akin to high art." - Robert Hogan "For anyone who doesn't know Fursey, this opportunity to do so is not to be missed." - George O'Brien, Dublin Book Review "The Unfortunate Fursey and The Return of Fursey are not quaint esoterica for the specialist, folks, they are living masterpieces. They haven't dated slightly and are as fresh and as powerful as when they were first written." - Darrell Schweitzer "The Unfortunate Fursey and its 1948 sequel, The Return of Fursey, have been called the Irish equivalent to T.H. White's The Once and Future King ... If you enjoy the dry, ironic humour of John Collier, Roald Dahl, Saki, or Jack Vance (and you should), you will like Fursey." - Michael Dirda, Essays and Literary Entertainments
