Vascular Innervation and Receptor Mechanisms: New Perspectives reviews the areas of structure, function, and pathophysiology of the circulatory system. The text focuses on the role of neuropeptides and structural function of endothelium. The book begins with a brief discussion on the background of autonomic and sensory nerves in the circulatory system, which is provided in Chapter 1. Having established the basic studies in the circulatory system, the book moves to the discussion on the analysis of peptidergic innervations and peptides in vascular control in various disorders. The last part of the book features the clinical applications of neuropeptides, perivascular peptides, and vasoactive peptides in different diseases and regulation, such as cardiovascular regulation, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and migraine and cluster headache. The text will be a good reference to both students and professionals in the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine.

On April 8-9, 1994, a symposium entitled Control of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems in Health and Disease was held at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. The purpose of this symposium was to honor the careers of Professors Hazel M. and John C. G. Coleridge. Participants in this symposium came from throughout the world. Their attendance at the symposium was a symbol of great respect and affection for the honorees. The Professors Coleridge have made many important contribu tions to the scientific literature concerning neural control of the cardiovascular and respira tory systems. In addition, they have made remarkable contributions to the lives of other scientists working in this field of investigation. Some of us have known them as mentors, counselors, friends, and supervisors; others have known them as co-investigators. Most importantly, all of us have known them as friends. This book, which contains the proceedings of the symposium, is dedicated to Hazel and John Coleridge. C. T. Kappagoda M. P. Modern Visualisation of the Endothelium

There can no longer be any doubt that the endothelium represents a very active tissue and is not, as had previously been thought, merely an inert lining material. On the contrary, the endothelium exerts a powerful influence on its environs through the release of multiple regulatory factors such as nitric oxide, endothelium derived hyperpolarizing factor and endothelin. It is therefore crucial to our understanding of the cardiovascular system that we are able to visualize the endothelial layer at the molecular level. Quantitative morphological studies permit visualization at this level, allowing the assessment of the changes that occur in the disease state. Modern methods of computerized image analysis have been applied to reconstruct the endothelial layer in three-dimensions - detecting even the most subtle of changes. Within these covers, an integrated text has been gathered by experts in each of their fields. They detail the latest technical and conceptual advances in the visualization of endothelium, its production of regulatory molecules and pathological changes.

New Perspectives in Adipose Tissue: Structure, Function and Development reviews the state of knowledge on adipose tissue. The book begins with discussions of the anatomy and morphology of adipose tissue. This is followed by separate chapters on the nervous control of circulation and metabolism in white adipose tissue; hormonal regulation of biosynthetic activities in white adipose tissue; hormonal control of lipid degradation; and plasma membrane properties and receptors in white adipose tissue. Subsequent chapters cover topics such as lipoproteins and adipose tissue; brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and energy balance in animals and man; methodological approaches to the study of the adipose tissues; adipose tissue growth following lipectomy; the adipocyte precursor cell; and adipose tissue dysfunction and its consequences. In addition to being authoritative source material, the chapters presented in this book are wide in their coverage and appeal.

High blood pressure disease is one of the most prevalent pathological conditions in modem society with potentially serious consequences. During the last two decades major progress has been made in the development of rational approaches to the treatment of high blood pressure. A key factor in this progress has been an increase in our understanding of how the brain controls blood pressure. The chapters in the present book, together with those in a previous volume, provide a broad overview of recent progress in our knowledge of the central neural mechanisms involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular system. It is our hope that these essays by leading experts in the field will not only provide a useful source of information, but will also stimulate inquiry leading to new discoveries in this critically important field of research. Purinergic Signalling and the Nervous System

In the first 20 years that followed the purinergic signalling hypothesis in 1972, most scientists were sceptical about its validity, largely because ATP was so well established as an intracellular molecule involved in cell biochemistry and it seemed unlikely that such a ubiquitous molecule would act as an extracellular signalling molecule. However, after the receptors for ATP and adenosine were cloned and characterized in the early 1990s and ATP was established as a synaptic transmitter in the brain and sympathetic ganglia, the tide turned. More recently it has become clear that ATP is involved in long-term (trophic) signalling in cell proliferation, differentiation and death, in development and regeneration, as well as in short-term signalling in neurotransmission and secretion. Also, important papers have been published showing the molecular structure of P2X receptors in primitive animals like Amoeba and Schistosoma, as well as green algae. This has led to the recognition of the widespread nature of the purinergic signalling system in most cell types and to a rapid expansion of the field, including studies of the pathophysiology as well as physiology and exploration of the therapeutic potential of purinergic agents. In two books, Geoffrey Burnstock and Alexej Verkhratsky have aimed at drawing together the massive and diverse body of literature on purinergic signalling. The topic of this first book is purinergic signalling in the peripheral and central nervous systems and in the individual senses. In a second book the authors focus on purinergic signalling in non-excitable cells, including those of the airways, kidney, pancreas, endocrine glands and blood vessels. Diseases related to these systems are also considered.
